This would be a great book for someone new to photography, to DSLRs, or to Nikon. It has lots of good information about how to use the camera in varying situations, and lots of good, if generic, advice on photography in general. My purpose, however, was to get information that went beyond the Nikon manual, that explained in more detail exactly what was going on with some of the camera's features. For example, I wanted to know just exactly what Active D-Lighting does, and does it impact RAW captures? Or more detail about the differences between autofocus group mode and single point mode, and why you'd choose one over the other. The book simply isn't written at that level, and I was disappointed. Hence the three stars.I would recommend this book to anyone new to digital photography or new to DSLRs in general. I'd characterize it as a beginning photography book, using the D750 for examples. I wouldn't recommend it for someone who, like me, is looking for more in-depth information than is contained in the manual itself.
Great book to complement the user's manual. I especially liked the first chapter "The D750 Top Ten List" which walks you through setting up the camera's most important settings, which is helpful when dealing with a brand new camera.I also like the fact that all the example photos in the book are documented with the particular settings used to take them. Finally, each chapter has an assignments section for practicing the things discussed in that chapter, which gives you a chance to evaluate your understanding of the content. All in all a good book to have with you, at least in the early stages of learning how to use the Nikon D750 (which by the way, I love).
My husband bought me the D750 a year ago after talking myself out of buying it a few times! It had been years since I picked up a DLSR and quite frankly as a self-taught photographer I was rather intimidated but all the settings and features. I knew the basics of photography, so I was looking to polish my skills and discover a few things I may not have known about photography in general and this camera. It’s worth mentioning, I purchased this book after seeing all the great reviews so I was pumped to get started. I have no doubt this book was a great read to many people but it did not provide me with much information personally. The first few chapter I knew would be about the basics but I encountered a few things that this author recommends that I would never recommend anyone do, for example setting a 4 second preview image display –That’s nice and all but I turn off previewing imaging, it’s easy to review your photos on DLSR and having this enabled will just drain battery. After all the author seemed really concerned about battery life in the early chapters. I know that’s something very little to complain about but the author doesn’t really mention the pros (or cons) to the setting he recommends. By page 200 I was expecting to learn a few things, I did take a few notes but so far I knew everything the author was telling me.Let me say this, I don’t think it’s a bad book, but it’s not intermediate photographers…I wouldn't even recommend it to beginners because the basics of ISO and Aperture aren’t even explained properly. It does mention a few unique settings that are worth researching after you finish the book. However, I found reading the user manual (I know the horrors!) and watching Northrups D750 Tutorial helped me learn my camera better. The user manual does a great job breaking down the views and if you’re like me and never use Live View, you can skip half the manual. In fact I would estimate a good 75% of the camera setting/features I don’t use or would never use…that’s no a dig a Nikon, but the basics are really what this camera is good at and the focus! The images and the pouring over the images at the beginning of each chapter was really great. I will definitely use them as a reference moving forward. But in conclusion I found the content to be a little confusing at times and I was really looking for more than what this author was putting into text.
I teach photography on the side and cannot recommend this book more. I tell my students to look for it (for their model of camera) because it does such a fantastic job of explaining big concepts in a way that makes sense to the specific camera. This book bridges a gap between the concept of photography I'm teaching and how to actually perform the concept on their camera, which means the student gets out there to shoot sooner and more often because they aren't hindered by the learning curve that comes with trying to self-learn a camera's menu and functionality.
This is a well written easy to understand book that makes sense of many of the features of the Nikon D750. My transition to digital began with a Nikon D5200 which I never really understood fully. This was due in part to my reluctance to give up film and the frustration of trying to understand another book I purchased about that particular camera. Mr. Sylvans' book not only helped me understand the much more complicated D750 it also allowed me to re-visit the D5200 and make sense of it as well.
It isn't a must have if you are a professional photographer and if you bought a D750 you likely are but it does have very useful info and covers all of the functionality in depth (except video) The paper quality is excellent, making the examples more useful than the books that use lower quality paper
Excellent read. My wife just got into photography recently and got this guide immediately after purchasing her D750. The first 20 pages are absolute gold for anyone new to the hobby. many "assignments" in the book based on concepts learned helped her to cement the ideas into her head, and as a result, she is advancing quickly. She gets the exposure triangle and how the 3 elements work with and against each other. A well thought out and executed guide.
This is a "how to" book that explains both how and why along with lessons learned the hard way by the photographer. This book represents your money well spent.
