About the Author
Norman K. Booth is Professor Emeritus, The Ohio State University, where he taught landscape architecture for over 31 years. Booth’s specialty was teaching introductory design and graphic courses in both the graduate and undergraduate programs. He also participated in teaching a series of five short courses on residential landscape design for over 20 years through The Ohio State Extension Service and in Arizona, California, Georgia, Washington, and Wisconsin. He served on the UNE and LARE committees for the Council of Landscape Architectural Registration Boards (CLARB) and participated in accreditation teams for the ASLA Landscape Architectural Accreditation Board (LAAB). He is the author of Basic Elements of Landscape Architecture (Waveland Press, 1990) and Foundations of Landscape Architecture (Wiley, 2012). James E. Hiss is Associate Professor Emeritus, The Ohio State University, where he taught landscape architecture for over 28 years. His specialty was teaching residential site design, graphics, and construction courses in both the graduate and undergraduate programs. He also participated in teaching a series of five short courses on residential landscape design through The Ohio State Extension Service and in Arizona, Maryland, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Utah, and Wisconsin. He is the author of Perspectives: An Effective Design Tool (ASLA, Landscape Architecture Foundation, 1985) and taught perspective drawing workshops in California, Colorado, Georgia, Hawaii, Ohio, Oklahoma, Texas, and Washington, DC. He retired from The Ohio State University in 2003 and co-founded The EDGE Group, a landscape architecture and planning firm, with offices in Columbus and Toledo, OH and Nashville, TN. He retired from The EDGE Group in 2013. He established Places + Spaces, LLC, where he continues part-time residential site design along with his writing efforts.

This rating I am leaving is for the physical book, not the quality of the contents, which are excellent throughout. The Illustrations, examples and writing are all professionally done. The physical book, however is sub-par at best. Pearson has used the cheapest, thinnest, lowest quality paper possible, which is so thin that the graphics constantly show through on the reverse of pages, which ruins the readability. My 9 year old commented upon first glance, how thin the paper is. That's saying something.The hardcover is fine, and the binding appears to be okay.
This book has been a valuable tool that I initially bought to help me with my college landscape design classes. I wanted more information than the materials provided in classes. My designs look more professional, cleaner, clearer and neater then my classmates. I recommend this book for its ease of use and great information. I use this book so much that it never gets put back on the bookshelf.
I have wanted to add some cohesion and "design" to my residential landscape, but I really didn't know how, or even where to start.This book was helpful not only in inspiring numerous ideas, but also for explaining what it means to design an outdoor space.I have learned so much just from looking through the pictures, and now I am reading through the text, and it is starting to make a lot of sense to me. highly recommend this book to any homeowner who is wanting to learn about landscape architecture, or is looking for creative new ideas for an existing space.A small gripe: I only wish that the illustrations were in color!
This book gave me some nice ideas how I might want to landscape my backyard. Worthy of adding it to my landscape and gardening library.
Of the several versions out there, this is the best. It has concise examples of good and bad landscape design practices. We do 3D renderings of homes and buildings and often have to create landscapes on the fly with little direction.This book has helped raise the quality of our landscape designs.
The little bit of "landscaping" our house has from the previous owners was atrocious at best. I purchased this book to assist me in some of the design aspects of landscaping- the book is a little older (which I knew when purchasing) so it was [very] affordable and I am definitely getting my money's worth. We don't plan to stay there forever-- a few years maybe--, so I wanted to make sure I was not going too crazy with what I wanted to do while still adding to curb appeal and, I needed some basic guidance as I proceeded. It is more of a textbook than some of the other types of books out there, which I don't' mind, but there are some chapters on the "business end" of landscaping which don't apply to what I am doing. Some of it is common sense, but there are definitely some points, tips, and design aspects I was not aware of that are helping me plan out the next few years-- from walkways/steps, driveway/pavement, to building noise berms/barriers to how to group plants to accent the style of your house.
A masterful treatise on landscape architecture; this is perhaps one of the best books I have encountered on the subject. This is notably a textbook with information being presented in a step by step fashion; that said, it is not only precisely outlined, but in addition, the information is presented so succinctly and comprehensively that it will prove equally understandable to the professional student or novice. After purchasing another book by this author, I had no hesitation to invest in this book as well. I am extremely glad I did!
