Of course it could only end with a reset. Almost a color-by numbers approach to story-telling but it certainly worked as a guilty pleasure. Even in this upside-down reality, everyone pretty much behaved as expected. The art was mostly lovable but if the same shots had been taken by a photographer, they'd tell the models to use their entire faces (and bodies) to show emotion - most especially their eyes - too often the characters looked like they were simply posing with their mouths open. Nevertheless, I'm only a fanboy so I still enjoyed reading it!
The end of Hickman's multiverse spanning adventures is big and complicated. Lots of things happen but at the very core is the relationship between Reed Richards and Victor von Doom. It's very well done and is very important. But for all that importance, how much has really changed more than the typical superhero relaunch? Maybe things are changed but it doesn't feel like too much has and that's a bit disappointing.
This is not a series you can just pick up and read without a lot of previous knowledge - it exists in a very specfic place and time in the Marvel Universe. It took 3 issues for me to get into the content of the series, and you can tell it's part of a major crossover of material that is covered in ancilary stories which you never see here. That said, the storyline for the Fantastic Four and Dr Doom is quite moving for this story. I wish that more time had been spent exploring that rather than the machinations of explaining the new universe that had been created. Part of this story reads a bit like the House of M crossover, but ultimately it seems less successful.
You must read supplementary comic book lines to understand this story. Very good, but you must read the other storylines to truly appreciate this final revolutionary comic book.
If you want a physical edition rather than a Kindle edition (as a comic reader for 30+ years I still prefer reading comics printed on paper), I recommend the paperback version. The paperback copy I purchased was in excellent condition. The binding was firm, no loose pages or cracks in the spine. The paper was glossy and high quality. When reading I was never distracted by any physical flaws. My one complaint is that the map of Battleworld is printed in middle of the volume so some of it is lost in the binding, but that didn't affect my ability to enjoy the story.Supplemental material included a gallery of all the variant covers (and there were lots for this series). They also included the Free Comic Book Day Secret Wars #0 at the end, despite the fact that its story is more of a prelude than a postlude. As far as I can tell the hardcover doesn't have any other special bonuses. This is not a situation where the publisher cut corners producing the paperback, but the hardcover is the "prestige" version. The hardback doesn't give you any more material or any better reading experience, but it costs more.Concerning the story told in this volume, I would call it a satisfying bow to the long story Hickman told through various Marvel titles. I cannot say how much you would enjoy it without reading his Fantastic Four or Avengers books before. Having read them this felt like a brilliant capstone on a monumental work. Esad Ribic's art has a touch of high fantasy to gives this story that epic quality. Ive Svorcina deserves mention for his color work which deeply enhances every page. Even among the universe of Marvel stories, this felt special, like a myth superheroes would tell. I loved it!
The story by Jonathan Hickman is far better than it's predecessor. The characters all look like they come from an alternate universe. The art much better and more realistic. I liked Dr. Doom's role in this story. The army of Thors also an interesting touch. Things are familiar and different. There are enough twists and turns to keep you on the edge of your seat. Worth the price of admission!
While I haven't personally read the lead up Hickman's runs on Secret Warriors, Fantastic Four, Avengers & New Avengers, I did have enough info to read this book without feeling confused about where it begins. That aside I do feel that even as a stand alone book, this is one of if not the best Event book that Marvel has published this decade
Secret Wars is the phenomenal culmination of Hickman's Marvel work, building all the way from his masterful Fantastic Four run. His Fantastic Four is some of my absolute favorite comics, and at the end of the day, Secret Wars is a Reed and Doom story, as the two face off with the absolute highest stakes possible. It would be tough to explain the events that brought us here, but there are seeds sewn in the first issue of Hickman's Fantastic Four, that bear fruit in this story, which in truth, could absolutely be read apart from his FF and Avengers work. Surprisingly, Hickman has a spectacular handle on each character's voice, outside of the Reed and Doom dynamic, cementing himself in the top echelon of modern comic book writers. I can't get enough of this guy, and Secret Wars is a GN worthy of the biggest, baddest fantasy novels. Secret Wars is much more than just another event comic, and while we do sort of stumble through the finish line into what's next, that payoff for me was grand and emotional. Highly recommended.
