Don't Start the Revolution Without Me!, by Jesse Ventura Dick Russell

From Publishers Weekly

Former pro wrestler and Minnesota governor Ventura (Do I Stand Alone?) has been awakened out of semiretirement by his outrage over the grievous state of the country and his need to once again exercise his enormous ego by rehashing events from his life and political career. He holds forth in his typical blunt, anti-intellectual style on a range of topics including the Rolling Stones, Fidel Castro and 9/11 conspiracy theories. His diatribes are loosely linked to a travelogue as Ventura and his wife drive to Baja California in their truck-camper. Excerpts from interviews and his wife's diaries provide a welcome break from Ventura's boorish tone (although his anecdotes—particularly one involving the Dalai Lama and the film Caddyshack—are occasionally amusing). The book concludes with Ventura combining his three passions: wrestling, politics and self-adulation when he imagines running for President on a WWE ticket. Whether the reader will find that a horrifying fantasy or a hilarious one will largely determine how they feel about this book. Jesse Ventura has written a first class book. It shows the inner workings of the American political system and the biasness and corruption that exists within the two major parties, The Democrats and the Republicans. It is not just the political skill and intellect that gives you insights into the political systems from Jesse's experience and rise in his own political life, it is the moral aspect to his judgments and opinions that matter including his own policies and how they would correct the system to be more fair and open for everyone. I actually agree with many of his own policies and they seem like the correct ways to generate better politics in moral, legislative and social terms. His policies can be seen on financial issues on taxation and social issues on drugs, political issues on openness for fair elections and even military issues on making wars more difficult to approve and legislate for the governments. All of these seem reasonable and correct. And even beyond these insights, the book shows his amazing and accomplished life as Jesse succeeds in all fields, from entertainment, wrestling, politics, education and in the Navy Seals. It also shows the many important figures in history that Jesse has met, influenced, socialized and worked with including Bill Clinton, Fidel Castro and Robert F Kennedy Junior. It is an amazing book to read full of interesting stories from the White House to Baja where he now lives. It talks about how he and his wife Terry travel to Mexico and love the lifestyle there so they buy a house next to the sea. I admire Jesse not just for his political and moral standings, but how he stands up for the truth even against many adversities from the media and two main political groups. With brave acknowledgement that 9-11 seemed to be a conspiracy, he has given the power of will back to the people to investigate the truth of the political systems and the authorities that hold the power to manipulate, exploit and bribe anyone that they choose or else scare them away with character assassinations. Jesse has succeeded in his destiny and this book marks his great career full of achievements. Yet even he states it may not end just yet. If he has the will and motivation to continue on to greater things like the Presidency, then he might one day attempt a political climb again into the electoral race. I recommend this book for all free thinkers who wish to see the truth into a very special life. It shows Jesse's hope that the people will wake up before it is too late to tackle the political deceits and corruptions that the authorities are spinning on the people. It is a book of hope for truth, justice and freedom.

Not only is this an interesting read, I found myself agreeing with Jesse on a wide variety of political issues. He is a former governor who has the guts to call out politicians and authority figures who are blatant hypocrites. People like Donald Rumsfeld and George W Bush, who purposefully lie to the American people in order to use our troops to carry out, what seems to amount to little more than, personal vendettas - something they could never get away with if more people in the general population had a loved one serving in the military. Ventura correctly points out that the vast majority of the politicians, who get us into wars, do not have a single relative fighting, or even in uniform. As a result, they have no personal stake in what happens to the brave men and women who are doing the actual fighting. Too many guys like Rush Limbaugh, Dick Cheney, Sean Hannity and Don Rumsfeld, who are some of the nation's most strident hawks, have never served a single day in uniform. It's pretty damned easy to yell patriotic phrases and wish God's blessing on the troops from the far distant sidelines; it's also blatantly disingenuous. At any rate, Don't Start the Revolution Without Me is compelling and well worth reading. I highly recommend it.

Not a non -fiction fan usually. This book was a fun read. It was my change of pace book while I had some others I was going through. The Kindle edition definitely has some editing issues. A story would end abruptly in the middle and move on to some thing else. The more I red it started to feel like hanging out with Jesse on his patio in Mexico just listening to him riff on this and that. The journal entries from his wife Terri added to the telling. Nice idea to show two points of view for the same events right while they were in the middle of it. Further proof of the kindergarten level sandbox crap that runs DC and the rest of the states under the guise of public service.

I'm a native of MN, so I am biased about Jesse. But I am biased positively, not negatively as many Minnesotans are. I have long been one of Jesse's fans, primarily because regardless if one agreed or disagreed with Jesse, one always knew where Jesse was at. There was no equivocation, hesitance, double speak, or yielding to special interests. I think it is rare to find that combination in any politician today. This book is a good insight into Jesse, the person. I highly recommend it.

I enjoyed it, but only as a slice of Governor Ventura's autobiography. The conclusions almost reached in this book left me wondering what the revolution was about. Yes, anti-status quo and all that good stuff, but how? When does it happen? Why can't HE start the revolution. Politically he was once in a great place to start. It's a bit of a let down, but it can be enjoyed as a slice of history, both Gov. Ventura's and our nation's as well.

When I started reading through this book I was amazed at how many of Jesse's views I agree with, when i finished it I realized he's one of the very few people I see "eye to eye" with on so many subjects. In the words of JFK "Those who make peaceful revolution impossible will make violent revolution inevitable."I'll leave it at that and avoid wandering down the road of rehashing everything Jesse covered and away from the book by rambling on about things he didn't. Keeping it short, the Republic is in big trouble! I could go on rehashing what's already been said, but there are some stellar reviews on this book that I simply can not top. So here's my tip of the hat to the book and my recommendation.
